On his way to the Gold… and beyond!
On his way to becoming an Olympic Champion, Steve was a two-time All-American wrestler and Big Ten finalist for the University of Michigan, where he won awards for outstanding scholastic and athletic achievement. After graduation, while employed as a deputy in the Washtenaw County sheriff’s department in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Steve earned a number of national and international wrestling titles before winning his gold medal in the 1984 Olympics.
Throughout the years following Steve’s gold medal victory he was determined to take the lessons learned from his Olympic journey to all of corporate America, sharing his message: How to experience the satisfaction of setting, actively pursuing, and achieving a goal; the application of the Olympic experience to all walks of life. Steve has taken this message to hundreds of groups, from college campuses to elementary classrooms, from service clubs to trade organizations, from social gatherings to corporate conference rooms. Steve demonstrates that the steps taken to achieve a gold medal are very much the same steps taken to achieve any goal, whether it is a job promotion, personal growth, academic or athletic success.
Today, Steve continues to support the sport of wrestling by serving as the national coach for USA Wrestling where he is responsible for working with the U.S. national team and resident athletes at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, CO. He is also responsible for coordinating the coaching efforts at the Olympics and all other major wrestling events. Steve helped lead the United States to its best Olympic performance ever, winning gold, silver and bronze medals at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. In the Gold Medal match he guided Rulon Gardner to his spectacular upset victory over the seemingly invincible Russian superstar, Alexander Karelin, who had not been beaten in thirteen years.
Aside from his continuing career at USA Wrestling, Steve continues, to successfully achieve his lifelong goal of bringing optimal training opportunities to the youth of America through his World Class wrestling camps held throughout the nation.
